Melamine resin or melamine formaldehyde is a substance that is already solid or solidifies by heating. It is obtained from the polymerization of melamine and formaldehyde products. It is dissolved in n- butanol and xylene in butylated form. Later, it is used in surface coatings by cross-linking with materials such as alkyd, epoxy, acrylic, butanol xylene and polyester resins. There are various types of it according to the recovery time speed. It was discovered by William F. Talbot.
Features
The features of melamine formaldehyde resins are high tensile strength, flexural modulus, heat-deflection temperature, low water retentivity, mould shrinkage, high surface hardness and volume resistivity.
Usage Areas
Melamine formaldehyde resins are generally used in kitchenware and in the production of plates. However, products that are made of melamine aren’t convenient for microwave oven usage because they absorb UV ray and warm up in the oven. Like other raw materials that shape by heating, melamine cannot be melted and recycled.
Melamine formaldehyde moulding powder
Melamine formaldehyde moulding powders are used in the production of various materials such as unbreakable plates, trays, kitchenware and teapot handles. They are divided into two main groups as injection and compression. Raw material takes shape in the mould depending on factors such as fluidity, moulding time and temperature. By increasing the fluidity, moulding time can be reduced but this also means that the amount of catalyst in the raw material should also be increased and thus the expiration date of the raw material will be reduced.
